In performing drills for soccer, don’t you get upset when your players are unable to head the ball well? Heading is the main skill that assists the players in learning to maneuver or control the ball while it is still up and about in the air.
It’s likely that in a match the ball might have to take the aerial route to travel from one point to the other. In players, the ability to capture the ball with the use of their head will ensure that most of the times, they’ll have the control of the ball.
There are some soccer drills that have the single objective of developing player’s heading skills. I’ll talk about some of these:
Before you begin with the drills, separate the players in small groups of 2 to 3 players.
Heading volleyball: The flawless method to master the skill of heading the ball is this. It is simple for two players to perform it alongside each other in such drills for soccer. It is similar to the game of volleyball except that players use their heads instead of hands to throw the ball over to the other side of the net. Yet, they are free to make use of their hands to serve the ball.
Score of the teams is based on the successful attempts made to flip the ball over to the other side of the net. You can make use of badminton net for this.
Juggling: This drill employs two players like in the earlier drill or just one will do. In a scenario where there’s just one player, he or she will juggle the ball with their forehead. Now let the ball fly up in the air and start with the practice. As is obvious, this drill among all soccer exercises is comparatively tough and the player gets better at it by practicing.
With 2 players, the ball can be thrown in the air and they head it back to each other. The player who is able to retain the ball on the head is the winner.
When you throw the ball, keep 2 players standing apart by 10 feet. Hurl the ball at them randomly and ask them to head it back. Instruct them to jump as soon as they are ready to hit the ball. This makes them learn the technique faster.
Beware that they are instructed to use their forehead or side of the heads. If they do not adhere to this practice, they will have more headaches and also the chances of injury increase manifold.
To achieve the most from this soccer practice, teach the player to bring their forehead in line with the ball. Then they jump to hit the ball so that the ball gets maximum height.
Your next step! To take what you have just learned and incorporate into the drills for soccer regimen. You will be surprised at how efficiently they start heading the ball.
