Liverpool Football League: The Pride Of Merseyside

Based in Liverpool, Merseyside is a football league known as the Liverpool Football Club founded in 1892 and in 1893 joined the Footbal League.In the history of English football, it is known to be the second most successful club.Winnings of the football club’s members wearing their Liverpool shirts proudly are the following: eighteen League titles, seven FA Cups and a record seven League Cups. They are also famous to be the most successful English club, as they wear Premier League shirts in European competition for winning five European Cups, three UEFA Cups and three UEFA Super Cups.

It was in 1985 when the Liverpool FC fans were involved in two tragedies, namely: (1) Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985, in which charging Liverpool fans caused a wall to collapse, killing 39 Juventus supporters; (2) Hillsborough disaster, 96 Liverpool supporters lost their lives in a crush against perimeter fencing in 1989 .

The dispute between the Everton Football Club committee and John Houlding, club president and owner of the land at Anfield resulted to the foundation of Liverpool football club.Liverpool FC played at Anfield eight years after it was founded by John Houlding.

The song’s title adorns the top of the Shankly Gates, which were unveiled on 2 August 1982 in memory of former manager Bill Shankly. The You’ll Never Walk Alone portion of the Shankly Gates is also reproduced on the club’s crest.

Liverpool has appeared and is often featured in a numerous media programs.In the first edition of the BBC’s Match of the Day, the club’s match against Arsenal at Anfield was highiightly screened.In 1967, the first match broadcasted and televised in colour was the match between Liverpool and West Ham United .

A New Stadium Rather Than Bank Balance Should Be Chelsea’s Long Term Goal.

With a great recent win loss ratio in the Premier League, a team of highly-paid and skilled international players and despite being one of the world’s richest men, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich still faces a serious task over the next few seasons. The main issue facing the Chelsea owner is that despite his vast personal wealth and his willingness to spend it on the squad, each year Chelsea finish it is likely to see a major debt accrued on the clubs balance sheet.

Maintaining Chelsea’s involvment in it’s youth squad, signing new players as well as the large amounts paid to existing players in the squad as part of their contract are expenses which cannot be wholly offset by the selling of soccer merchandise, ticket sales, player sales and sponsorship deals. UEFA’s uptake of tough new rules regarding a teams allowance to enter their competitions with reference to being financially profitable, means that Chelsea have a need to find a long-term answer to this problem.

The process of stemming the clubs debt started last summer when several high-income first team players were permitted to leave the club for new pastures. Players like Michael Ballack, Joe Cole and Deco were not offered new contracts while Ricardo Carvalho was sold to Real Madrid and manager Carlo Ancelotti did not replace them with renowned stars, instead promoting youngsters from within the club’s junior ranks. This slashing of staff certainly had the effect of minimising the wage bill, but even these cuts have not fully dealt with the issue of club debt.

Mr Abramovich’s ultimate objective for Chelsea is that they become not only the biggest name in the English league, but European and World Soccer too. Currently either Real Madrid, Manchester United or Barcelona enjoy the status of the worlds ‘biggest’ club, depending on how you wish to define the criteria for that title and there are two key reasons why Chelsea, despite Abramovich’s large expenditure and a policy for paying huge wages, have been unable to compete with the levels set by the current soccer giants:

  • The gate receipts collected by the relatively small Stamford Bridge stadium.
  • The appeal of the clubs merchandise worldwide.

Addressing the issue with the size and revenue generating capabilities of Stamford Bridge is something which Roman Abramovich may consider reviewing in the near future. Rumour has it that Stamford Bridge may soon be only part of Chelsea’s history, rather than the cornerstone of their future. Soon, Chelsea fans may be watching their home games at a 60,000 capacity purpose designed stadium near the current Stamford Bridge and it is hoped that this new stadium will earn the income and give the club the renown it needs to truly become one of the world’s soccer giants.

A new ground, designed for soccer and with a much larger capacity, will have an instant effect on Chelsea’s financial situation. A higher capacity, if filled for each home game, will result in Chelsea earning far more a year from spectators. The increased revenue from a new stadium will be incredibly beneficial in helping the club follow the new set of rules the UEFA wants in use in time for the start of the 2012 season.

Another bonus financially will be that Chelsea could decide to sell their stadium naming rights to the major sponsor, as neighbours Arsenal did with their new Emirates stadium.

A new ground would also have the benefit of improving levels of merchandising sales that the club generates as the new ground would give the club increased exposure, especially in the far larger customer markets in Asia and the USA.

If Chelsea are ever to realize their owners dreams, the time has surely come for them to stop paying high transfer fees and players wages and invest in the infrastructure of the club. If Mr Abramovich is prepared to move Chelsea onto the same level as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United, then it is required he invests his money into a bigger stadium as that is the next step that the Londoners must take in order to reach the levels of greatness to which they are aiming for.

Chelsea’s Best Players

While Chelsea’s team is packed with skill all across the field there are a few key players that make the team perform at the level they do. Without these players Chelsea just wouldn’t be on the same level.

1. JOHN TERRY (England, Central defender)

Terry sets the benchmark with which the other players adhere to, captaining both club and country. A skilful and brave defender, showing technically sound style and a great amount of skill. Always a danger at set pieces and never afraid to lead by example, he is a fine example of a strong team leader and an outstanding choice as captain of the club and his country.

2. ASHLEY COLE  (England, Left back)

He may be booed roundly by Arsenal fans every time he lines up against the Gunners, but despite their bile, Ashley Cole is still, arguably, the best left back in world soccer. His form and confidence has not been consistently great, but at his best his marauding runs down the left and quality balls into the box are only matched by his ability to shut down some of the world’s best players. He is known for keeping players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi quiet in games. That’s no fluke, only a world class left back can pull it off.

3. MIKAEL ESSIEN (Ghana, Central midfielder)

Essien’s injury last season showed how sorely he could be missed,even in a team filled with a world class midfield. Essien helps balance the midfield. His energy, work rate and defensive skills are first class, but he is also a technically gifted soccer player of great intelligence. He gets forward at the right time along with a powerful and accurate kicking game from a distance. At today’s prices the 24.4 million pounds that it cost to buy him looks like a bargin.

4. FRANK LAMPARD (England, Central Midfielder)

Who wouldn’t want a player like Lampard in the midifled scoring handfuls of goals. He has started scoring goals again this season due to Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to give him a slightly deeper role in the team. Frank Lampard is a vital source of attacking strength due to his accurate shooting and ability to link play with his strikers.

5. DIDIER DROGBA (Ivory Coast, Attacker)

There are many who believe that Didier Drogba is the finest attacker in world at the moment, and on current form, it is hard to dispute that. Didier Drogba wearing the Chelsea home soccer jersey makes all goalkeepers fear the upcoming game. The big striker may have his critics, who lambaste his theatrics when he falls over when tackled, or who bristle at his continual insistence to argue with officials and opposition players, but on his day the Ivorian striker is unstoppable. His goal scorring ability and excellent presence are vital for Chelsea, and at times he has carried the team on his back. He alone may end Manchester United’s dominance of the Premier League.

Should Manchester United Have Michael Owen

One of the most surprising transfer deals last summer came when it was announced that Newcastle United’s oft-injured striker Michael Owen would be trading life in the Championship with the Toon Army, to join Champions Manchester United.

Many experts were left confused by the decision of Sir Alex Ferguson. After Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer most people expected that a current soccer great would appear in the latest Manchester United apparel to replace him. Instead, Manchester United got Luis Valencia from Wigan and Michael Owen. A player who has been struggling with fitness and form over the last five years along with more injuries than one can count. On top of this is the fact he is a former Liverpool player. Their were a few unhappy faces from Manchester United fans when the transfer was announced.

When the deals fine print become known it became clear that Alex Ferguson had, as always had a plan. Michael Owen is intended to be used from the bench and is on a pay as you play deal at Manchester United. He would be used to assist from the bench when needed, he would not be the lone striker.

Only managing to play in a few games as a late substitute it was not the start the Michael Owen would have wanted. However his adoption into the United ranks seemed complete when he came on in the Manchester derby game to net a last minute winner for United to deny City a point at Old Trafford. The last minute goal even brought up talks of a spot in the England team, and everyone expected Michael Owen to gain a more prominent spot in the United team.

However since then, it hasn’t really worked out for Owen. Another two goals has given Owen four this season from 18 games, which is not great statically despite the fact that in many games he was a substitute, There seems to be an increasing feeling that Owen’s long term stay at Manchester United is looking shaky.

Owen’s chances of regaining a place in the England team are getting slimmer by the day it seems. Fabio Capello has stated that his players need to be fit and playing well consistently in order to play for England. Owen has seldom been either of these in the past few years. However it should be known that Capello doesn’t seem to apply this rule to all of England’s strikers, Emile Heskey it seems is a shoe-in in every squad, regardless of whether he plays for Aston Villa or not.

So for the time being, Owen’s wonderful last minute goal against City has been the high point of the experiment so far.It will be highly unlikely for Alex Ferguson to continue the agreement with Michael Owen unless the former English striker can find form and consistency in the remainder of the season, much in the way youngster Darron Gibson is doing. The question remains whether Owen has the ability and fitness to earn a spot in next years team, however it seems likely that Sir Alex Ferguson’s gamble, in the long run, may not pay off.
